I’m here in Oahu, visiting family and the Hawaiian Vintage Surfboard Auction (July 22 and 23). I cruised into check out some surfboards at Aloha Board Shop and was pleasantly surprised to the ceiling full of vintage surfboards. Hanging from the rafters are boards from Aipa, Surfline, Town and Country, and a variety of others.

This one was my favorite, a mid-1980′s Ben Aipa Town and Country in pristine shape.

This one is an early 70′s, twin fin, Surfline shaped by Randy Rarick, also in excellent condition.

On July 22 and 23, 2011, surfboard collectors from around the world will make the pilgrimage to the Blaisdell Center, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. Over the past two decades, vintage surfboard collecting has become extremely popular with the young and older generation of surfers. Wednesday, June 1st Quiksilver and Partners and Spade celebrated Jamie Brisick and Mike Moir’s surf retrospective The Eighties at Echo Beach with the Hottest Hundred Yards book launch party and photo exhibit in downtown Manhattan. 500 guests attended the store front for an evening filled with everything representative of the radical era of surf in the 80′s that was EchoBeach.

From the custom 80′s boardshorts and tees to the vintage surfboards, wax and fins complete with Pacifico Beer in attendees hands the event paid homage to an important time in surfing history. 100 of the evening’s guests received an early-release copy of the book, signed by Brisick. Guests included designer Cynthia Rowley, surfers Herbie and Christian Fletcher, shaper Shawn Stussy, and many more.

The exhibition will be open to the public starting June 1, Saturdays 12-7 and Sundays 12-6, or by appointment at40 Great Jones Street,New York City.

My Vintage Surfboard Find: 1987 T&C Ben Aipa Stinger

Everytime I visit Oahu, I swing by Kimo’s Surf Hut to check out their vast collection of vintage surfboards. Last summer, I scored a 1987, Town and Country Ben Aipa Stinger shaped for Todd Chesser (RIP) and airbrushed by his mother. Kimo gave me a rocking deal on this vintage sled. I couldn’t have sold my vintage, 5’10″ Infinity twin fin egg to a more stylish surfer. Brian from Highland Park emails me through my Infinity Craigslist posting and titles it “Eggy Weggy…” With a subject title like that, I had to sell it to him. Thanks Brian – Rip and Tear!

Quiksilver and Free Ride generation icon, twin fin pioneer and 4x ASP world champion Mark Richards come together in the creation of a limited offering of vintage style products inspired by MR’s legacy in the surfing world.

Throughout the 70′s, Richards could usually be seen scoping out the swells in his signature tank with customized monogram logo. Thanks to Quiksilver, a re-issue of this authentic look from Mark’s competition days is now available in an eleven-piece collection.
